The concrete walls are certainly a main design point that brings the space into that industrial trend. In fact, when architect Sergey Makhno was first putting together a plan, those lovely concrete walls become somewhat of an obstacle. The way the sound bounced off the hard surfaces made it difficult to work and to focus, which led to the inclusion of sound absorbing panels, similar to those that might be used in a recording studio.

It is not difficult to see the 1970's influence in the harsh exterior of the home. Slate gray tiles and a low profile could easily be off putting. Four renovations from the team at Los Angeles-based Commune design will take your breath away.

The attic itself is not enormous, but the vertical space meant there could be enough room for a comfortable home as long as things were arranged creatively. The architects used the vaulted, slanted ceilings to create a mezzanine which in turn created the effect of a two story home, with a bedrooms tucked upstairs and an open living area below.
