Google’s London Offices: Revamped Level, ‘L4’

Last week, Google staff at London headquarters in Victoria made their way up to the brand new fourth floor, former engineering level, ‘L4’. This amazing space laughs in the face of a general consensus that fun workplaces harm productivity. This is an environment that focuses on creativity, comfort and openness.

The open plan space creates opportunities for collisions of genius to occur, as many products manifest when teams around the building discover each other’s work, and link up to discuss new approaches. The brainstormers are spoilt for choice with access to a games suite complete with consoles, TV and pool table, and a sound proof music hang-out, equipped with guitars and drums. A gym is also at hand to keep the workers in healthy body and mind, or employees can sit back on deck chairs in a garden scene complete with grassy carpet and a stray rowing boat!

Star ship inspired corridors lead from clear walled pods equipped with video conferencing nooks, to relaxation zones with squishy seating and headphones to block out distractions. Walls lined with white boards record ideas off the cuff, to be discussed later on the giant dual level sofas that fill the cushion scattered meeting rooms. With a ‘coffee lab’ serving an extensive range of blends to stimulate the creative buzz, and four free restaurants, including sushi and tapas bars, to feed the brain, we wonder if anyone ever leaves!

Surely, there is a Fortran lounge too somewhere!

The London office does not disappoint in the Google ethos of playful and inspirational spaces. This is hardly surprising considering what we have seen from Big G before at Pittsburgh, Sydney, Russia and across Europe.

Airbnb’s Beautiful Offices

Office Snapshots has the scoop on holiday home rental company, Airbnb’s move to new premises. The new space means the team can spread their wings over 25,000 square feet, in airy surroundings designed by Michael Garcia and Farid Tamjidi of Garcia-Tamjidi.

The impressive headquarters can be found in Potrero Hill, San Francisco, with light flowing throughout the white open space, maximised by glass dividing walls. The industrial ceilings are offset by gentle elements, flowers and wall art, reminding you that “Life is lovely”. Pops of color bring warmth; work stations are defined by vibrant dividers, and a large kitchen houses a cheerful rainbow of SMEG fridge freezers. Injections of humour are made throughout, and there is a firm nod to the travel links of the company, with map murals and airport reminiscent signage.

Sleek Vitra furniture contrasts against traditional pieces to create a home away from home feel, much like the Airbnb ethos. In fact, they have brought several of their listings into the work place, with loving recreations of accommodation from Hong Kong, Berlin and more. These cozy meeting rooms punctuate the professional space with domestic lamps, rugs, cushions, and even a faux window with floor length curtains. With their clients houses sitting right inside their doorstep, no wonder they are one of the web’s fastest growing companies.

Apple’s Beautiful Retail Stores

In 2000, Apple (under Steve Jobs) decided they needed to completely rethink their retail strategy. They no longer wanted to be dependent on other retailers to sell their products and yearned to offer customers a unique experience. For this they put together a team of retail/architecture experts and embarked on a journey to design the perfect store. It was much like designing a product – they built a prototype first and iterated designs until they were happy. Teams involved in the design of Apple’s retail stores around the globe now include Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Eckersley O’Callaghan, Eight Inc., Gensler, and ISP Design, Inc., together with Apple’s in-house design team. Though Apple’s decision to build their own stores was viewed as a gamble in 2001 it is now considered as one of the success stories of the industry. These stores now epitomize Apple and are spread out around the globe.

Wikipedia defines co-working as ‘a style of work which involves a shared working environment, sometimes an office, yet independent activity’. Considering the fact that there are more and more people telecommuting these days, this is a concept that is quickly gaining traction especially among techies, internet entrepreneurs and freelancers. Today we are featuring co-working spaces from Loosecubes, a site dedicated exclusively to such spaces from around the globe.

Loosecubes connect people with working spaces they want or, better yet, need. You simply have to determine what kind of a work space would work best for you, and the search throws up numerous options which you can customize based on preference. The site also invites you to host your own space and find fellow coworkers who share similar interests. You just might find this site to be a solution for your procrastinating tendencies, lack of inspiration and motivation and simply to be an escape from daily telecommuting. Inside The Cool Digs Of Rackspace

Offices are spaces that people often find dull and boring. Not only because we relate them with work that needs to be done, but for the hours many of us are desperately counting until that wonderful moment when the little handle on that clock hits 5. But what if we have an office with areas that remind us of home? Would we feel more relaxed and productive? Morgan Lovell architects toys with this idea in their design of web hosting company Rackspace‘s office. Each floor represents an area that a home usually consists of. From the ground floor that represents a garage, right up to the top floor that is an artificial garden lit by a huge ceiling window, Povell has put every detail into use. They also manage to tie the concept to Rackspace’s motto of being the ‘home of fanatical support’.

We gave every floor a different theme inspired by the ‘family home’, but with a bit of a twist. The ground floor represented a garage, complete with its own personalised mini cooper. The first floor became a 70’s inspired lounge for meetings, with chairs situated around an artificial fireplace. The second floor, also perfect for meetings, turned into the library, including dark leather chairs, long mahogany tables and bookcases. The garden, decorated in decking and fake grass, was situated on the third floor along with the boardroom; a complete replica of Number 10 Downing Street.

For the company, the building stayed true to their values and the variety in workspace means they will never lack inspiration. For the energetic and creative staff, it’s a place they can come to everyday and always feel at home… literally.

You probably managed to notice a pattern in these photos – everything here is very… British. There is a real customized Mini Morris in the garage, which is a statement british car, there are bobbies and telephone boots on the wallpapers, but be prepared for what comes next. On the second floor, which serves for holding meetings, is a meeting room. Nothing unusual, you would say. But, what if we say the meeting room looks like 10 Downing Street? There must be something quite important going on in there, and Povell managed to put an accent on a simple, usually boring meeting room with this monumental british homeland post. Quite an unusual and interesting idea, don’t you think?

The New Stuttgart City Library

How often do you read? Of course, we’re not talking about our articles, because we are sure you love to go through those, we are talking about physical(read non electronic) books. Books you can lend from a library, take home, snuggle in a warm blanket and lose yourself in some quality spent time with your book. Well, no matter how much you read, we are sure you would read a lot more if you had a library like this in your city. Stuttgart City Library just opened it’s doors last week, and caused a lot of hype – not only amongst those avid book lovers from Stuttgart, but also amongst ones who love architecture and design. You see, this library isn’t the average public building you come across everyday.

Designed by architect Eun Young Yi, this city library looks like a complicated two color Rubik’s cube puzzle from the outside! But step in and you will be surprised at its simplicity.

The interiors sport a very open layout with books visible throughout. Some may find the whites a bit sterile, but make no mistake, books are the center of attention here. But, what really caught our attention, and we are sure it caught yours as well are – the stairs! They are so randomly placed, connecting each floor, but also connecting the whole space together. You’re not just climbing the stairs, you’re exploring the environment around you, the view of the library is completely exposed to your eyes. We bet that climbing those stairs feels so triumphant!

Of course, this kind of a monumental library has a Café named LesBar (in translation – Reading Bar) and a space for children to play and acquire the habit of reading. Their space is a bit more colorful, naturally, but still keeps up with the clean, structured vibe of the rest of the space. Books for children are cleverly put in bins, so that they can easily go through them, because we all know that they are mostly attracted to the cover of the book. And we are mostly attracted to this library!

Fancy Restaurant Interior Design In Tehran

Now here is a something fancy from Iran. Expose designers were involved in planning these spaces and one of the top design requirements was to facilitate easy cleaning of the space under tables. Expose achieved this by making ‘floating’ tables and also designed matching seating. We are not going to say this would be the most comfortable solution out there, but hey, ergonomic seating is not the first thing on your list when you dine out.
