Winners of the Hover Architectural Visualization Contest

The Hover Challenge was a competition organized by Ronen Bekerman with a mission to find the most dynamic concept for the architectural design of a hover structure with full reign of the surrounding environment and materials used to visualize it. We are featuring the winner and the runner ups of the contest which attracted several impressive entries from talented artists worldwide. What was judged for the challenge was the composition, materials, lighting, texture, technical skills, and originality in the architectural and conceptual interpretation of hovering. Below are the images of the winners’ creations, check it out!

Grand Prize Winner, Benjamin Brosdau for his attention to detail and bold interpretation of the hover theme with a cantilevered wing over the river.

1st Runner Up, Tolgahan Gungor for his intriguing environment and excellent composition of the hover theme.

2nd Runner Up, Derek Jackson, for the beautiful asymmetrical layering effect of his building with a Green Roof!

3rd Runner Up, Micael Dillner, for his great concept, unique point of view and execution of hovering elements.

4th Runner Up, Jamie Holmes, for his well balanced composition of the environment and integral concept of the hover effect.

5th Runner Up, Julio Cayetano, for his exquisite use of color and focus on the perfect composition with a hover concept that leaves a satisfying mystery from our vantage point.

Now we’re wondering whether we will see a female contestant win the next conceptual competition we feature- Keeping our fingers crossed!

Sometime back in 2008, the CG Society organized a contest that invited digital artists from around the globe to present their most imaginative and grandest futuristic vision for the new world through architecture and landscape design. The end results were amazingly impressive and immeasurable to what we normally see on a daily basis. Though it’s been a while since this competition has ended, we wanted to acknowledge the winners, as well as show our viewers what the creative process can do in conceptually building innovative and inspiring structures and civilizations with the future of design in mind!

5.7 Billion dollar resort that houses a 55 story high infinity pool

With stunning views all around and sporting a 150m long infinity swimming pool set on top of the world’s largest public cantilevered platform, the Marina Bay Sands hotel opened up to much fanfare on June 23rd in Singapore.

Hotel

– 2,560 luxury rooms in three hotel towers, totaling 265,683 square meters (2,860,000 square feet)

Sands SkyPark

–the three hotel towers are connected at the top (200 meters/656 feet) by a 9,941 square meter (107,000 square foot) park that brings together a public observatory, jogging paths, gardens, restaurants, lounges, and an infinity swimming pool

- This 1.2 hectare (3 acre) tropical oasis is longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall and large enough to park four-and-a-half A380 jumbo jets

- It spans from tower to tower and cantilevers 65 meters (213 feet) beyond to form one of the world’s largest public cantilevers

- It is 340 meters (1,115 feet) long from the northern tip to the south end

- The park’s maximum width is 40 meters (131 feet)

- The 1,396 square meter (15,026 square foot) swimming pool is the largest outdoor pool at its height and has a 145 meter (475 foot) vanishing edge

- The entire park can host up to 3,900 people

- Its lush gardens include 250 trees and 650 plants

Casino

– the “atrium style” casino features four levels of gaming and entertainment in one space totaling 15,000 square meters (161,500 square feet) with the atrium ceiling holding a 7 ton chandelier with 132,000 Swarovski crystals and 66,000 LEDs

Artsy Achitecture: Hydrogenase, Algae Farm by Vincent Callebaut

The Hydrogenase Algae Farm envisioned by the creative minds at Vincent Callebaut takes the green revolution to an entirely new plane.

Mimicking nature in design, the algae farm is a completely self-contained miniature biochemical power station able to absorb CO2 and give off useable energy. Green algae and seaweeds recycle CO2 that would normally contribute to the greenhouse effect.

The purification station is, “observatory of the sea fauna and flora that fight for the protection of ecosystems and for the revitalization of the beds of corals and of endangered species. It is a true cleaner of seas and oceans by skimming and damaging as main nutrient the floating waste banks of our energy-consuming civilization.”

Mahina: The Dream House You Cannot Own!

This could give the Iron Man’s house a run for its money. Approximately 40 miles north of Auckland, New Zealand is the perfect perch for a proposed dream house. Though only an architectural visualization at this point, this is the kind of house you would normally expect a Bond movie villain to own!

Mahina, Maori for moon, designed by Weber Consulting was originally slated to be placed on the relatively uninhabited Kawau Island. However the island’s residents are torn over whether or not to allow it to be built. The controversy has led to international interest, and according to the New Zealand Herald News, the official website for the Mahina says that the moon-shaped house can be built anywhere on the planet.

The website literature states, “A predominantly modern residence with a ‘Bondesque’ suggestion of times past; the glamorous age of martinis and tuxedos.”

“Dispel the misconception that white is starck (sic) or austere. Here it is lavish, sumptuous, opulent.”

The house is 827 square feet and is set to have a plant room, deck, swimming pool and “thermal mass” to regulate internal temperatures.

Amazing Architectural Concept Physalia: The Amphibious Garden

As always UN comes up with shocking hair-raising statistics about world calamities. As worrying they are, they have a strange power to jostle creative minds. Several mind boggling inventions and innovations come into being when the earth is endangered and the concept amphibian garden done by Vincent is just an example of it.

Though the project is still on paper it is a fantastic idea which brings solution to the water problems of the European populations of the world. The rivers of Denube, Volga, Rhine etc will have these floating amphibian water gardens which will carry people and clean the water at the same time. It has double hull, so as it moves, it also filter / cleans the water that passes through it…A fact worth knowing about this prototype is that it generates more energy than it consumes which is exactly opposite of what current vehicles do. Its roof has solar cells which runs on 2 hydro-turbines. These turbines covert the energy of flowing river (river current) into hydro-electricity which means no external power is required to run them. Radical, aint it?Wait there’s more. The carbon foot prints (carbon emission and fuel waste) left by traditional boats are also absorbed by this floating garden. Its surface is in aluminium (light weight and non rusting.) The aluminum is covered with TiO2 (titanium di oxide) which is photocatalytic in nature and the coating destroys bacteria, viruses odor and harmful gases.

Futuristic Pod House Concept

Imaginations knows no boundaries. And this one can tell by looking at the MercuryHouseOne mobile lounge. Created by Architecture and Vision, this modern unit reflects a very pragmatic approach to an extremely unconventional design. It is a self sufficient mobile unit that can fit in both urban as well as rural environment.

At first instance the pod resembles an alien headgear. But the unit is highly futuristic and compact in dimension. The exterior covering is made using curved light marble pieces, white Carrara marble to be precise, thereby providing required toughness. The interior is flexible and can be configured as per ones taste thereby putting it to diverse usage. Light fitments, TV panel, and sound systems are in-built to fashion an out of the world experience inside.

The in between seams are of chrome, with acrylic windows and door. The outer cover is backlit, which gives a gripping view at night. The material used makes it light weight yet sturdy. Solar panels, in black, on the top, give a distinct look and also suffice for power requirements. So the unit is eco-friendly and functional in a non-powered area also.

Burj Khalifa (Formerly Burj Dubai) Opens Officially

The building is complete and the height has been revealed. The tallest man made structure that has ever been built is 828 m (2,717 ft) tall and is now called the Burj Khalifa. The height of the tower, which was one of the most closely guarded secrets during construction, was flashed onto a giant screen during the inauguration before a 400,000 strong crowd. Estimated to cost around Rs.6900 crores (US $1.5 Billion) the building was officially inaugurated on January 4th amidst flashy fireworks and much fanfare.

Wikipedia lists these as the records currently being held by Burj Khalifa:

Tallest skyscraper to top of spire: 828 m (2,717 ft) (previously Taipei 101 – 509.2 m (1,671 ft))

Urban Forest: Sky Scraper With Gardens

If you are tired of looking at rigid building designs, this post is surely going to blow you away!

Designing is an art and one rarely envisions such path breaking ideas. This building, modeled by MAD architects will be located in Chonquing, China. Connected by a core cylindrical structure, each floor has been placed a little off the centre, giving the building a unique feel. Abstract floors with full length glass windows make the building look surreal and the balcony gardens only add to its beauty.

The floors are designed to create an illusion of each floating upon another. The model is such that it brings together nature and the urban metropolis thereby creating a masterpiece that would please all!
